By the time we got back to camp, there was a blazing fire going and pieces of the small bush ‘saur our hunters had slain earlier sizzling on spits above the flames. One of the younger riders, I believe his name was Warrick, was tending the meat, making sure it was turned to keep it from burning.

“Wow, I feel so much better,” Mary declared as she emerged from a nearby path, still toweling her thick hair to dry it. Two other women followed her out, Charity, a slender blonde that appeared to be full-blooded human and Mattie who was a heavyset brunette, the line of orange scales lining her exposed arms declaring her half saurian.

“The swim was great but it was kind of hard to relax,” Charity grumbled as she shifted her open pack over her shoulder.

“Yeah,” Mattie chimed in. “I swear I heard something rustling around in the bushes by the creek.”

“Well, girls, by the time I arrived and thumped around in there with my sword there wasn’t anything except a large rabbit,” teased Mary.

I looked from one to the other of the women. These were experienced warriors one and all, they didn’t spook easily. “Hey, I really hope it was just a rabbit but how about we all make it a rule not to wander off on our own tonight?” I didn’t like it that something might be skulking about in the brush. Worried, I was about to send a couple of the hunters to check our perimeters when Wolf and Jaz came into the camp from further downstream. I could hear the soft stomping and snuffling of the horses coming from deeper down the path.

“Seeing as it’s going to take a while to make the ‘saur into something edible, Jaz and I are going to do some scouting. We’ll be back in plenty of time to eat our share.” Wolf laughed as he pulled me in for a quick hug.

“Okay, but I’d watch it.” I laughed. “Some of these young fellows are looking mighty hungry.”

Orin and another young man looked up and grinned. They really did look like they could put away some food.

Wolf and Jaz were arranging their packs and gear to one side of the clearing when I saw Charity leave her half-made bed and slip in at Wolf’s side. Speaking softly enough to make him duck his head closer, she walked with him as the men crossed the camp, headed towards the path the horses had just disappeared into.

A little curious, I shrugged my shoulders. I’d taken a few steps towards the place where Josh and Jud where huddled over a map opened between them when I noticed that Ja’har was missing.

“Everyone isn’t accounted for,” I told my uncle with a frown. “Where’s the new guy, Ja’har?” Every encounter with that man left me feeling slimy and my skin crawling. And I really wanted to know why he was trying so hard to pass himself off as a human. Since the end of the Great War no one really cared if a person was of mixed heritage.
